In Washington Township teachers meet in Professional Learning Communities whose objective is to improve student learning and the outcomes of student learning.
As semester II began, the Spanish PLC began with some in depth discussion related to making some real pedagogical shifts. The discussion revolved around the high number of failures in our first year Spanish classes.
As with any difficult discussion, human nature invokes excuses... But reality kept knocking at the door...we are the ones who have to change! Not change for the sake of change; but a change that is explored, discussed, piloted, etc....
What our discussion brought to the surface is the simple fact that too many students live in and accept a culture of failure. How do we as Spanish teachers change our approach in an effort to move students from this culture of accepting, and sometimes assuming, failure? Tough question...And one with many answers!
Our first attempt to answer this question will be in researching student portfolios and self-assessment. One of our newer teachers - yes, she made us all very proud - volunteered to do some research on this topic and here is what she found and prepared for the group!
