Reading the War on Poverty

North Central Latin students take seriously the words of Cicero in his speech Pro Archia.  He said, "Ceteros pudeat si qui ita se litteris abdiderunt ut nihil ex eis possint neque ad communem adferre fructum, neque in aspectum lucemque proferre."  "Let others be ashamed if they have so hidden themselves in literature that they can offer nothing from their reading for the common benefit nor can bring forth anything into the light to be seen."

Now in its fifth year, our project Reading the War on Poverty helps our students take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to the needs of our community.  Our mission is to help fight poverty in Marion County through the public reading of works from ancient Greece and Rome.  As our website states, one Saturday in April, students meet at Kids Ink Bookstore on Illinois Street to read aloud the entirety of either the Iliad, the Odyssey, or the Aeneid.  Through the pledges and donations they receive, along with the donation of Kids Ink (they give us 10% of that day's sales), we make a contribution to Shepherd Community Center, whose mission is to break the cycle of poverty on the near eastside of Indianapolis.

The following pictures were from this year's reading of the Odyssey on April 20.  Yes, that was the day of the NC prom, and yes, students were attending prom that night managed to give an hour of their time during the day.  That is just the type of student we have at North Central.
